Alive Now! Ferguson Jenkins interview

Alive Now! Ferguson Jenkins Interview

Fergie Jenkins was an All-Star baseball pitcher and Cy Young winner. His 284 victories are the most by a black pitcher in major league history. Jenkins also became the first Canadian to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.

In this interview I did with him back in 1976 Fergie shares some of his faith journey, the struggles he went through and the crisis that led him to Jesus. One of the wonderful things about God is that he can meet us in the midst of our pain, and bring peace and the ability to keep going when all seems dark.

Also included in this segment:

  • The Imperials give a classic rendition of “Give Them All To Jesus” live on the program
  • And Paul tries to convince Fergie to sign with the soon-to-be formed Toronto Blue Jays (this was 1976 after all!)

Alive Now! Classic video with David Mainse from 1976

Back in 1976 I began one of the first late-night Christian call-in TV shows in Canada! One of my first guests was David Mainse, before he started 100 Huntley Street. Less than a year later I would join David as he launched 100 Huntley Street. I share the full story of that journey and our connection with Crossroads in my book Don’t Waste Your Pain.

On the set of Alive Now with David – see the full video below!

Enjoy a throwback to the ’70s, complete with sideburns, hip music and a much younger David Mainse!

Jerry Howarth – faith and the Blue Jays

Jerry Howarth was the well-loved radio broadcaster for the Blue Jays from 1982-2017. What many don’t know is that he was also a strong believer and has a deep faith in Jesus.

I had the privilege of meeting with him many times and interviewing him as well. Here is what he has to say about “Don’t Waste Your Pain”

What a great read with so many insights by Paul Willoughby whose own life is so revealing and inspiring at the same time. He overcame pain and suffering and now shares how so many others have too, for all of us to learn from. From Justin Bieber’s mother to all the wonderful scripture quotations, Paul’s book is so meaningful, real and helpful with God as the centrepiece.

Listen to this short clip of Jerry sharing about what his faith in God means and why he would pray before each broadcast.
